Round Ijsselmeerdijk - Warder

Water predominates during this route, which takes you through the Oosthuizen area. Water of the IJsselmeer, the shore of which you can follow for quite a few kilometers and thus enjoy panoramic views. But also water in the polders, which are crossed by ditches, canals and channels, systematically constructed to regulate the water level in the country behind. During this fun bike tour you can enjoy the small scale of church villages and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Beautiful sights lie like hidden gems along the route.

The first is formed by a mill located in the Zuidpolder. This Zuidpolder mill was probably built in 1670 and was powered by the water of the Schermerboezem. The octagonal inner gate is thatched and to make it easier to drive, a steam screw pumping station was installed in 1875. The mill was decommissioned in the second half of the twentieth century, but despite the fact that it is used as a home in 2014, it is still operational.

Then you come to the Fort north of Purmerend. The fort and associated buildings were built in the period from 1886 to 1912. During the war, in 1945, suspects and convicts of collaboration with the German occupiers were imprisoned here. Since 1981, the buildings have been used by a wine importer.

There is a beautiful bell tower from 1974 in the cemetery of the hamlet of Grosthuizen. The bell, dating from 1664, is rung on Remembrance Day, on December 24 and 25 and at the New Year. In addition, the loud system with falling clapper is used at funerals.
