Description
South Limburg is full of beautiful castles, old mills and other historic buildings. You just have to know where to look, because these gems are often hidden behind hills. This route takes you past the most beautiful sights around Heerlen and Valkenburg.
Historical sights
Just outside Valkenburg you pass the first beautiful spot: Hoeve Strabach. You have only cycled one kilometer, but you might still want to stop and take a look at the farm from the early 19th century. The east side of the historic farm has been expanded into a mansion and the associated buildings are constructed from marl, a type of stone found in the nearby marl caves. The next sight on the route is the Overhekermolen from 1878. The only thing left of it is a mill hull.
Cycle Center Valkenburg
Just before you enter Heerlen you cycle past Landgoed Ter Worm. A castle was built here in the fifteenth century, but the current complex dates from the seventeenth century. You then cycle past the Oude Molen from 1774 and eventually arrive at Cycle Center Valkenburg, the start and end point of this route. Here you can rent bicycles of all shapes and sizes. From here you can also cycle route 138243 if you want to explore the area further.
Surprising Voerendaal
Not only Valkenburg and Heerlen are fascinating cities on this route. Voerendaal is also definitely worth a visit. The first written mention of the village dates from 1065. The village is therefore centuries old and this is reflected, for example, in the finds of Roman buildings and the St. Laurentius Church that can be found here. The St. Laurentius Church was consecrated by the Pope in 1049, making it the only church in the Netherlands that was ever consecrated by the head of the Christian community.
