The largest contiguous forest in the Noordoostpolder is the 1100 hectare Kuinderbos. The forest is not a primeval forest but landscaped. Because there was a need for agricultural land in the 1940s, the Noordoostpolder was drained. The Kuinderbos was planted at that time because the peat soil in this part of the polder was too poor for agricultural use.
Due to the soil variation, many special plants and mushrooms can be found. Because the soil is partly acidic and partly calcareous, 23 different ferns grow in the Kuinderbos. Butterflies, birds of prey and pine martens also feel at home here. If you pay close attention, you will see that the forest was planted on the seabed. Here and there shell remains can still be found among the trees.
Along the way, also take a look at De Driesprong Marina in Langelille. De Jachthaven started in 1961 as a coffee house and has grown into a beautiful company.
