Description

Vlaardingen is considered the herring city of the Netherlands. Fishing has always been important in the city's history. Stop off at Eetcafé De Waal for a cup of coffee. History and industry go hand in hand in this route along Rotterdam's impressive world ports. You pass the Maritime Museum, further on you pass through the Old Port. Here you see the Netherlands' own White House: a 45-meter-high office building from 1898. It was the first skyscraper in Europe at the time. You drive over the Willemsbrug to the Kop van Zuid. The ports here were developed by the infamous businessman Lodewijk Pincoffs. You cycle over the Erasmus Bridge. Via the historic Veerhaven and the Maastunnel you drive to the old village center of Charlois. The Heijplaat peninsula is definitely worth a trip.
