Engbertsdijksvenen Tour from Den Ham

From here you cycle through beautiful nature and many nice villages. From junction 88 you cycle into the Vroeger Achterbroek, an age-old landscape of hayfields, hedgerows and woods. In the spring you see wild flowers here. How different is the vast landscape around Vroomshoop and Geerdijk. From the middle of the nineteenth century the raised bog was exploited here, because the Twente textile industry needed peat as cheap fuel. This is how you cycle to the Engbertsdijksvenen, an extensive peat area with heathland and fens. In the meantime all the raised bog in the Netherlands has almost disappeared and only a few remnants remain. In the middle of the Engbertsdijksvenen there is still a piece of raised bog of about five meters thick, completely in its original state.
