Description

Your cycle route starts at Van Beek Tweewielers. Fort Tienhoven was part of the New Dutch Waterline. Completed in 1850, it consisted of a defensible guard house measuring 15 by 15 metres. The fort had to close off the Tienhovense Vaart and guard the inundation quay plus locks. Gunterstein Castle is the third castle to have been built on this site. The first, from 1300, has been demolished. The second was built here in 1518, but was set on fire in 1673 by the French troops. In 1680, the stately home that still stands today was built here: a square brick building surrounded by a moat. You cycle on the dike that leads across the Loosdrechtse Plassen to Kortenhoef. The black tern breeds on the remote banks.
