Description

A ride through the Frisian landscape with its many mills and windmills and with the characteristic double mention on the place name signs: once in Dutch and once in Frisian. You will find that on this route.

Mill de Korenaar

The tour starts at Tulip Inn Franeker. Start the day with a nice cup of coffee or relax after your ride with a drink or a meal. Would you like to see more of this area? Then curl up here and get back on your bike the next day with route 137867. An attraction on this route is Molen de Korenaar in Sexbierum. This mill was built in 1868. The flour mill once also functioned as a peeling mill. Grain is still regularly milled on a voluntary basis with two pairs of millstones.

Picturesque Franeker

You cycle through the open fields to the Waddendijk and continue your way for a while along the sea. There is nothing like the wind in your hair and the salty air of the Wadden Sea at the Wadden Sea. Part of Franeker, one of the Frisian eleven cities, has a protected cityscape. You can admire dozens of national monuments in the picturesque town. Take Cammingahuis or Sjaerdemahuis castle, for example. Part of the east side of this monumental building dates from 1400. Another part of it dates from the early 16th century and the west side from the 15th century. Until 1969 the building was used as an inn. Now it houses two museums and a bank.

The Botnia House

The Botnia House, or Klein Botnia, was built before 1530. In 1853 the house was used as an orphanage. Above the entrance you see inscription stones, the top of which is flanked by statues of orphans.
