The area around the Frisian Lakes is perfect for a bike ride with breathtaking views. This route takes you around the Tjeukemeer, where you can gaze out over the water. You will also cycle through peat polders and charming towns.
The largest inland lake in Friesland
The first part of this route runs from the town of Oudeschoot to the Tjeukemeer. Then you make a circuit around part of the lake, passing through picturesque villages and small marinas. The Tjeukemeer is the largest inland lake in Friesland with an area of 22 km². The shape and surface of the lake have changed over the century due to storm surges and drifting ice. The lake also grew larger due to forest and peat fires. There are even stories about villages that have been swallowed up by the Tjeukemeer. For example, the church and cemetery of the village of Rohel have disappeared into the lake. Who knows what else is hidden in the lake.

Mill the Hersteller
At the beginning of the route you cycle past Molen de Hersteller from 1857. According to the inscription on the mill, this was the first of the six mills that drained the Sint Johannesgaster Veenpolder until 1931. De Hersteller is the only mill that remains in this area . The mill was restored in 1981, but it was no longer possible to make the mill suitable for grinding.
