You cycle through the Reigerbos, which is part of Oranjewoud. This old estate was built in 1660 on behalf of Albertine Agnes, Princess of Orange Nassau. The forest still has a park-like character with vistas, winding paths and impressive tree-lined avenues. In many places you will recognize the English landscape style and even remnants of the French Baroque style.
Gorredijk is located on the Opsterlandse Compagnonsvaart. The place was created by peat extraction. Much was imported, stored and traded. A nickname of the Gordyksters is 'Handjeklappers'. The peat that was imported into Gorredijk mainly came from the region behind Tijnje.
The name of the village of Tijnje is a Dutchization of the Frisian word tynje: a fish dam in a watercourse. At Tijnje there were two'tynjes\\\' in the canal that led to the raised bogs in Kortezwaag and around Gorredijk. This canal was dug at the beginning of the seventeenth century for peat extraction. At the Tijnje cemetery you will find a Frisian bell tower.
