Description
Between Knokke and Damme you will find an area full of extensive polders. Get on your bike and cycle past green meadows, beautiful windmills, romantic polder houses and through charming towns. This route takes you from the coast at Knokke to historic Damme. Along the way you cycle briefly across the Dutch border.
Book city Damme
The coast of Knokke-Heist is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle via Heist to Damme through quiet and green areas. Damme is known as the city of books, because the writer Jacob van Maerlant wrote a large number of encyclopedias there in the Middle Ages. He was Europe's most important writer who conveyed knowledge to the people in the 13th century. Damme has a rich history, but you can also relax on a terrace when you need a break. From Damme you cycle to the special place where the Damse Vaart, the Leopoldskanaal and the Schipdonk canal intersect.
Seaside resort of Knokke
Then you cycle across the border to the Dutch fortified town of Sluis and then set sail for Knokke. Be sure to make some time here to park your bike and stroll along the boulevard. Get some fresh air and look at all the dressed up ladies walking around this seaside resort. This is also possible from a terrace!
Nature reserve Het Zwin
The nature reserve Het Zwin is located between Sluis and Knokke. The sea water can enter this nature reserve at high tide through a channel. You once found an inlet here that in the Middle Ages provided a passage for ships on their way to Bruges and other places, but due to silting up, shipping is no longer possible here. Now nature is calling the shots here. You will find special salt-loving flora there, but Het Zwin is also the habitat of a variety of birds.
