There's plenty to discover around Damme. From green meadows to large cities, centuries-old windmills, and romantic polder houses, you'll find it all here. This route takes you to Sluis in the Netherlands and then on to the Belgian seaside resort of Knokke and the Zwin nature reserve.
From book town to fortified town
The charming town of Damme is the starting point of this route. This town is also known as a book town, as the famous medieval writer Jacob van Maerlant lived here and wrote an extensive oeuvre of encyclopedias. From here, you'll head towards the Dutch border to visit the Zeeland town of Sluis. This unique fortified town is definitely worth a visit. Just don't linger too long, as the beach beckons.
Nature reserve Het Zwin
From Sluis, you'll drive along the edge of the Zwin nature reserve on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. This area is strongly influenced by the sea through channels and creeks. At high tide, the sea flows into the channel, and at low tide, the water retreats. This creates a unique vegetation consisting of salt-tolerant flora. You'll also find a variety of bird species here.
Seaside resort of Knokke
A little further on, you can enjoy a breath of fresh air by the sea in Knokke. Relax on a terrace and enjoy the view over the water or simply relax on the beach. If the weather isn't so good, you can also do plenty of shopping or grab a bite to eat in a cozy restaurant. From Knokke, cycle back to Damme via Heist and Ramskapelle.
