Description
There is plenty to discover in the Damme area. From green meadows to large cities, centuries-old mills and romantic polder houses, you will find it all here. This route takes you to Sluis in the Netherlands and then you cycle further to the Belgian seaside resort of Knokke and the Zwin nature reserve.
From book city to fortified city
The pleasant city of Damme is the starting point of this route. This city is also known as the city of books, because the famous medieval writer Jacob van Maerlant lived here and wrote an extensive oeuvre of encyclopedias. From here you set course for the Dutch border to visit the Zeeland city of Sluis. You really should take a look at this special fortified town. Just don't linger here too long, because the beach beckons.
Nature reserve Het Zwin
From Sluis you drive along the edge of the Het Zwin nature reserve on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. This area is strongly influenced by the sea through channels and creeks. At high tide the sea flows into the channel and at low tide the water withdraws. This creates special vegetation consisting of flora that can withstand salt. You will also find all kinds of bird species here.
Seaside resort of Knokke
A little further away you can get a breath of fresh air at the sea in Knokke. Sit down on a terrace and enjoy the view over the water or install yourself on the beach. Is the weather a bit disappointing? Then you can also shop here or have a bite to eat in a cozy restaurant. From Knokke you cycle back to Damme via Heist and Ramskapelle.
