The scenic landscape around Doetinchem

Special places in the Achterhoek
The starting point of this route is between Doetinchem and Gaanderen. From here you cycle through the varied Koekendaal nature reserve, a typical small-scale Achterhoek landscape, to the village of Zelhem. Just outside Zelhem you cycle past the first sight on this route: the Wittebrinksemolen from 1889. This flour mill can now be visited by appointment. Then you cycle through the Kruisberg forests, a forest area with river dunes and fens. The height differences in this area are particularly special, but the rivers and stream valleys and the forests surrounded by meadows and arable lands are also worth seeing. Other sights on the route include Keppel Castle, the Laag-Keppel watermill and the Walmolen.

Be sure to take the time to take a stroll through Doetinchem. This city used to be an important trading place for farmers. They offered their merchandise on the market. Furthermore, not much is known about the history of the city, because in 1527 many documents were lost in a major city fire. After the Second World War, Doetinchem grew enormously as a city and developed into an important city in the Achterhoek.
