Cycling through the Westerkwartier

The Westerkwartier is a beautiful region in the west of the province of Groningen. Here you cycle through a beautiful landscape that is dotted with sights.

Westerkwartier
In the Westerkwartier you drive through a mosaic of wierden, ditches, grasslands and winding roads. You can get a breath of fresh air in this wide landscape! And enjoy the many historical sights, such as the famous Groningen churches that you pass in Niekerk, among others. In Zoutkamp you will pass a few picturesque wooden houses from the nineties of the last century on the Reitdiepskade.

Humsterland
Around Niehove you drive across the former Wadden island of Humsterland, one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Western Europe. Be sure to take a look at Niehove itself, the entire town enjoys a protected village view. The wierde has been inhabited continuously for about 2200 years, wow! Until 1100, the seawater had free rein as far as Marum. The current land was won from the sea after centuries of toil.

Groningen windmills
In addition to characteristic farms, capital villas and the monumental Gemaal Waterwolf from 1920 (near junction 86), you will also see a few windmills while cycling. At Visvliet you pass the Hilmahuistermolen, a polder mill from 1868 that is close to the border with Friesland. In the village of Noordhorn you will pass Fortuin, a flour mill from 1890.
