Discover Limburg's peat history

From the starting point you will first discover the Deurnese Peel and the Mariapeel via a beautiful cycle path through nature, remnants of what was once an inhospitable raised bog area. Exploration began in the Middle Ages. Because peat was very valuable as a fuel, it was called 'the black gold of Peel'. It is now a bird-rich nature reserve, you can hear birds chirping everywhere. Experienced birdwatchers will spot special species here! You will also find traces of the peat cutting past elsewhere in the region. The route thus passes straight through America, a peat workers' village. Another special place you will encounter is the De Steeg estate, which you can clearly see from the route. The mansion dates from the eighteenth century.
