Tour of Vrouwenpolder, Neeltje Jans and Kamperland

Explore Noord-Beveland! The former island is connected to the mainland by dams and a bridge. Centuries ago, there was a temple near Colijnsplaat, which was dedicated to the Celtic-Germanic patron goddess of fishermen and sailors: Nehalennia. At the end of the third century, people moved out of the area because of invasions by the Germans, but also because the area was constantly flooded. The first dikes date back to the Middle Ages, but it was not until 1684 that all of Noord-Beveland was reclaimed. After a stopover at Verscentrum Sandee, you cycle to Neeltje Jans, an island halfway along the Oosterscheldekering. It was once a sandbank in the mouth of the Oosterschelde, but it was turned into a work island for the construction of the storm surge barrier. Bring your binoculars to spot seals!
