Vollenhove, Kraggenburg and Vollenhove

The Voorsterbos extends between the villages of Vollenhove, Ens, Markenesse and Kraggenburg. Although it is one of the oldest forests in Flevoland and looks centuries old due to a dense canopy and alternating thick and thin tree trunks of deciduous and coniferous trees, it is still relatively young: the forest was planted in 1944. Parts of the Voorsterbos are the Wendelerbos, where a swampy landscape predominates, and the Waterloopbos, which housed a scientific institute.

Due to the variation in nature, in which you will find beautiful plants such as crabs, many bird species find their way to the Voorsterbos. Woodpeckers, but also the kingfisher, the honey buzzard, the sparrowhawk and the golden oriole are no exception. The pine marten and the otter, originally released in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, survive on smaller mammals such as squirrels and mice. Dragonflies and amphibians are attracted to the pools and small waters between the trees and in autumn hundreds of species of mushrooms grow in the Mushroom Reserve on the Leemringveld.
