Description

Around the twenty-two kilometer long Veerse Meer, you can enjoy picturesque villages, old mills and a beautiful view over the water. The width of the brackish water lake varies between 150 and 1500 meters and in the deepest places the lake is up to 25 meters deep. The total water surface is 2030 hectares and there are thirteen islands in the lake. The Veerse Meer was created by damming the Veerse Gat when the Delta Works were built.

Until 1969, the management of the lake was in the hands of the Delta Service. The brackish water, with varying salinity, is one of the few places in the Netherlands where the Zuiderzee crab and the trumpet lime worm, as well as eel bread, occur. Thousands of rainbow and brook trout are released here every year. Sailors, anglers, recreational divers, surfers, water skiers and canoeists come to their heart's content on and in the lake.

The next mill you see is in Veere and is called De Koe. When you arrive in Veere, you can see a round stone tower mill in this village from quite a distance. De Koe is still relatively young; it was not built until 1909. This happened at the place where a ground sailer from 1736 burned down. According to Zeeland tradition, the brick mill is white in color. De Koe is used to grind corn and is still able to grind, but the mill is also used as a holiday home.

Then you cycle to the capital of Zeeland to see flour mill De Koning. The mill was built as a successor to a burned-down predecessor. The current round hull was placed on the substructure of the old mill. Until 1938, the wind mill was used to grind grain professionally. After that, the mill fell into disrepair, with the demolition in 1951 as the nadir. Five years later, the mill was restored to working order.

In the heart of Middelburg you will also find the beautiful Abdijtoren De Lange Jan. The church tower has 90.5 meters and was built in the second half of the fourteenth century. The tower is eleventh on the list of tallest church towers in the Netherlands and has been on fire several times during its history. You can climb the octagonal tower if you dare to walk up 207 steps.
