Plasmolen is also known as the only artists' colony in Limburg. From 1900 onwards, hundreds of artists settled here. The unspoiled nature you encounter here served as a source of inspiration for most of them. The city of Gennep lies at the confluence of the Maas and Niers rivers. It is believed that the city acquired its city rights well before 1371. This is still evident in the historic architectural style you see throughout the city. The windmill "Rust na Arbeid" (Rest after Labour) is located in Ven-Zelderheide. This stone grain mill was built in 1880. Then you cycle a little further via the Bleijenbeek estate and along the Maas back into Afferden.
