Tour of Groede, Zwartgatsche Kreek and Breskens

Your cycling route starts in cozy and historic Groede, where you can first have a cup of coffee on one of the terraces around the church. Then you cycle to the Zwartgatse Kreek. This creek within the dike was created after the damming of the Zwarte Gat estuary in 1602. You can take a break on the beach at Strandpaviljoen Puur. In the National Landscape of West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen you can see from the pattern of constructed channels and dikes that the battle against the water took place in small steps. Remnants of fortresses, forts and line dikes are traces of a completely different kind of battle. Breskens Lighthouse (Nieuwe Sluis) is fun to photograph. The black and white painted lighthouse has been here since 1867: it is the oldest existing cast iron lighthouse in the Netherlands.
