Dinxperlo, Aalten and Varsseveld

The village of Varsseveld has only six thousand inhabitants. This place was probably inhabited very early; In the area, finds of reindeer hunters and settlements that traded with the Romans in Roman times were made. The name Wazovelde, the original name of Varsseveld, already appeared in a deed from 823. The Varsseveldse kopps form a small-scale covering sand relief; small mounds rise 1 to 5 meters above the surrounding area. Along the way you will pass the Van Hal Mill (hull/remains). The flour mill was built in 1866 on an elevation and is therefore a belt mill. The mill was named after the family that owned the mill until 1999. The round stone mill was severely damaged during the Second World War. Part of the blades had already broken off after a lightning strike and the flour mill was dismantled in 1957. After the mill came under the management of the Korenmolen Voorst Foundation in 1999, it was restored in 2010. In 2013, the Van Hal mill is ready to grind again. You cycle further and finally arrive in Varsseveld. One of the remnants of the village's rich history is the De Engel tower mill, built in 1850. In 1936, the contents of the mill, including grinding stones, sails and windshaft, were sold because the then owner was forced to retire due to the economic crisis in the 1930s ( literally) saw no more bread in the windmill company. In 1957 the mill hull became a monument and in '67 the municipality bought the remainder to enable possible restoration of the mill. Ultimately, it was not until 1976 that the mill was festively reopened on May 22. In 2010, the mill was temporarily shut down because there were some cracks in the blades, but this problem was quickly resolved.
