Tour of Gaanderen, Doetinchem and Slangenburg

Via Zeddam you drive to Doetinchem, an important city in the Gelderse Achterhoek. The city is strategically located on the Oude IJssel. Doetinchem used to be important as a trading post for farmers. They offered their merchandise on the market. To the west of Doetinchem you will find the Slangenburg estate. In the seventeenth century Frederik Johan van Baer, who lost his wife to a serious illness, decorated the building with paintings that reminded him of his beloved. In addition to being an artistic painter, the lord of Baer was also a good agricultural economist. For example, he bought the Doetinchemse Heide from the city of Doetinchem and laid out a lane system there that still exists today.
