Explore the part of the Netherlands near Venlo, against the German border. Tegelen, a district of the municipality of Venlo, is mainly known for the clay that has been extracted here for centuries for the ceramic industry. Many fossil remains of beavers, water moles, hyenas, panthers and even rhinoceroses and hippos have been found in this clay. Clay has also played an important role in the history of Belfeld: in Roman times the village was a small settlement where, among other things, pipes were made of clay.
Further on you will pass Nieuwenbroek Castle. The beautiful white building was built around 1560. The oldest part is an L-shaped house with beautiful stepped gables. The castle is surrounded by a wide moat. Another beautiful castle is De Borcht, also called Castle d 'Erp. This brick building with its beautiful side wings is also surrounded by a canal. Next to Kasteel De Borcht you will find the Kasteelmolen, a watermill from 1700 that has been completely restored.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
