Explore the youngest of the Frisian Eleven Cities and discover the hidden secrets of the town of Workum. This town was granted city rights in 1399 and Workum has focused on shipbuilding since the fifteenth century. When many polders were also created in the seventeenth century, mill construction also became large. The nostalgia of that time can still be felt, because Workum is a protected cityscape. With many attractions, the relatively unknown town is a hidden treasure, waiting to be found.
One of the best kept secrets is the Izeren Kou windmill, which means'Iron Cow\\\' in Frisian. The mill is located in Allingawier, which is a museum village. The mill is part of the Aldfaers Erf Route, a cultural-historical museum route that runs through Allingawier, but also through Exmorra and Piaam. The paaltjasker was placed in Allingawier in 1970 as a museum piece. The Izeren Kou functions as a demonstration mill and is capable of grinding in circuit.
