Cycling route: 137221
Provided by: Groots Genieten
You can drive straight into the town along the Bolswardertrekvaart from 1638. The old city center with its canals. The Stadsgracht guides you through the city. You will also come across beautiful windmills on this route. The Izeren Kou functions as a demonstration mill and is capable of grinding in a circuit. Then you continue to the Gate to the Zuiderzee, as Makkum was called in the Middle Ages. Due to its strategic position and the presence of two locks, Makkum grew into an important trade center. The Makkum coat of arms, on which a golden mermaid holds a sailing ship and a lime kiln, are reminiscent of the shell lime distilleries that flourished here.
