Description
South of Roermond you will find several small towns with beautiful green areas around them. This route takes you through the typical Limburg villages of Sint Odiliënberg and Posterholt. Along the way you cycle through beautiful nature reserves with interesting sights.
Historic Sint Odilienberg
The first part of the route runs from Posterholt to Sint Odiliënberg, a small village east of the Maas. Sint Odiliënberg has a rich history and that is reflected in the village. Saint Otger, a missionary from the eighth century, for example, is buried here and there is a beautiful basilica of great cultural-historical value in the village. The Pieterpad, one of the most famous long-distance hiking trails in the Netherlands, also runs through this village. That is why the village is popular with tourists.
Castle Freymersen
A beautiful sight that you cycle past just outside Sint Odiliënberg is Freymersen Castle. There was already a castle on this spot in the Middle Ages, but not much of it remains. A round brick tower with two floors above a cellar is the only remnant of this time. These elements have been incorporated into the current country house, which was built in 1865.
