Description
On the border of Drenthe and Friesland you will find the beautiful large forests, heaths, drifting sands and relaxing stream valley grasslands of the Drents-Friese Wold National Park. This is the largest contiguous forest area in the Netherlands after the Veluwe. The symbol of this forest area is the black woodpecker. You can often hear the drumming on the trees of this bird here and if you are lucky you will also see a woodpecker during your trip.
The sheepfold in the Drents-Friese Wold
Centuries ago, the Drents-Friese Wold was a wild and inaccessible area. You found impenetrable swamps, raised bogs and meadows interspersed with forests, sand drifts and small lakes. Now you can take the most beautiful trips there. You cycle past the Doldersummerveld, a moist heathland where sheep often graze. At night, the sheepfold provides shelter for the flock. In the information center at the sheepfold you can learn more about the sheep and the environment.
The Schulte House

The Schulte House
In the south of the area there is a lookout tower that offers you a beautiful view of the Doldersummerveld. The archaeological museum located in the Schultehuis is also fun to visit. This old official residence of the Schulte van Diever was built in 1604. A Schulte was a kind of representative of the central authority. The house has been preserved in its original state.
