Breskens, Oostburg and IJzendijke

Also nice is the town of Breskens, which arose at the end of the ninth century as a farming community. Around the Second World War, Breskens had a hard time, because in and around the village the Germans built many forts and bunkers to strengthen the Atlantic Wall. A low point in the history of the village is the bombing on September 11, 1944, in which about two hundred people died. Many houses were also damaged and destroyed in the subsequent fighting, although the inhabitants of Breskens had already been evacuated by then. After the war, the emerging fisheries and the many beaches near the town that attract tourists again ensure a thriving economy. The Fisheries Museum is nice to visit, but the Breskens lighthouse is also more than worth a visit. The tower is called Nieuwe Sluis and is located near the hamlet of Nieuwesluis. The lighthouse was extinguished in 2011, after marking the Scheldt since 1867. The black and white painted tower is the oldest surviving cast iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. From a historical point of view, IJzendijke has more to offer. In the Middle Ages it was a prosperous trading town with flourishing cloth weaving mills. The nickname"Petit Paris\\\" appeals to the imagination, although the origin of that nickname is not clear. The Markt, the Veste, the IJzendijkse Molen and the oldest Protestant church in Zeeland, as well as the nineteenth-century Cadsandria beer brewery are nice to visit if you have some time left.
