Nieuwvliet-Bad, Groede and Nieuwvliet

Cycle through the Nieuwe Groedsche or Oude-IJvepolder in a southern part of Zeeland. The polder is part of the Catspolders, which were diked in during the Twelve Years' Truce. The Nieuwe Groedsche or Oude-IJvepolder was diked in again in 1613 and thus acquired a surface area of 778 hectares. In this polder you will find beautiful farms and old farms with names that appeal to the imagination, such as De Bosduif, Blauwe Hoeve, Kreekzicht and Eikenboom. Tourism predominates during this beautiful trip. Get a breath of fresh air on the westernmost sandy beach of the Dutch coast and enjoy the endless view of the sea. Strolling on the beach you can find unique fossil shells. You come across a lot of the Zwincockle in particular, but the trick is of course to find fossil black shark teeth that wash up here less often. On the way you see a round brick mill hull in Cadzand. This dates from 1848 and, despite the fact that the mill has been dismantled, you may still recognize the type: the Molen van Aalbrechtse (hull/remainder) was a ground sailor. This was once a windmill that ground corn. What is special about the mill is that it was equipped with a chain wheel, which was only installed in mills in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and in East Flanders. Around 1920 this cross gear was replaced by a tail cross gear and since 1931 the mill has been dismantled. Later the hood was also dismantled. In 2013, the striking building serves as a holiday home. De Drie Gevels is the base of the cycling tour, but you can also book an overnight stay here for a wonderful weekend away. Personal attention and a friendly atmosphere make you feel at home quickly and it is wonderful to relax with a drink in the bar or lounge after your tour. When you have freshened up, you can enjoy a delicious meal in the fantastic restaurant or in the garden. Cycle route 136821 also starts and ends at De Drie Gevels, so you can see even more of the area the next day!
