Picturesque surroundings, in the middle of the beautiful South Limburg hill country

Cycling through Limburg means cycling over hills, to peaks and valleys, from one prominent historical site to the next that seems even more significant. The well-known tourist attraction Valkenburg lies in the north of the forest, Gulpen in the south. You'll pass through many small church villages, where you'll get a good sense of Limburg's outdoor life. This cross-border cycling route takes you through, among other places, the Schweibergerbosch, located on the Crapoel Plateau. The eastern edge of the plateau is covered with trees, making it a hillside forest. The Bissen gravel farm is located in the Schweibergerbos, and hidden among the trees is a war memorial. The bluestone cross, complete with a corpus, commemorates five fallen British soldiers who crashed into the forest during a bombing raid. The plaque lists the names of these five brave fighters. Free parking is available at Landhotel Alberts. From the hotel, cycle to the village of Mheer, where you'll see the castle of the same name. Mheer Castle is the only castle in the Netherlands with a so-called pitch nose. The small U-shaped courtyard within the four wings is accessible via a footbridge over a dry moat. The west wing is the oldest part of the castle; this section was built in the early fourteenth century. The north wing was built at the end of the same century, and the east wing, topped by a robust round tower, dates from the fifteenth century. Incidentally, the tower was built on foundations from the late eleventh century. The south wing was built around 1570, completing the current castle. The Onderste Molen (Underneath Mill) in Mechelen is a beautiful watermill that was used as a corn mill and also to generate electricity. The original mill was built in 1215 and was then called the Commander's Mill. Later, after restoration, the mill was renamed the "Onderste Molen" (Underneath Mill). The mill was fully operational again in 2005 and is now operated by volunteers. Back at Landhotel Alberts, we recommend staying overnight.
