Description

Cycling through Limburg means cycling over hills, to peaks and valleys, from one striking place in history to the next location seems even more important. The famous tourist attraction Valkenburg is located in the north of the forest, Gulpen in the south. You will pass many small church villages, where you get a good feeling of the outdoors in Limburg. This cross-border cycling tour takes you through the Schweibergerbosch, which is located on the Crapoel Plateau. The eastern edge of the plateau is overgrown with trees, making it a slope forest. The Bissen gravel farm is located in the Schweibergerbos and a war memorial has been erected hidden among the trees. The hard stone cross, equipped with a corpus, commemorates five fallen British soldiers who crashed in the forest while throwing a bomb. The five names of these brave fighters can be read on the plaque. You can park your car for free at Landhotel Alberts. From the hotel you cycle to the village of Mheer, where you will see the castle of the same name. Mheer Castle is the only castle in the Netherlands with a so-called pitch nose. The small U-shaped courtyard within the four wings is accessible via a walkway over a dry canal. The west wing is the oldest part of the castle; this part of the castle was built in the early fourteenth century. The north wing was built at the end of the same century and the east wing, which has a robust round tower on top, dates from the fifteenth century. The tower was built on foundations from the late eleventh century. The south wing was built around 1570 and the current castle was complete. The Onderste Molen in Mechelen is a beautiful water mill that was used as a flour mill, but also to generate electricity. The original mill was built in 1215 and was then called the commander's mill. Later, after a restoration, the mill was renamed the 'Lower Mill'. The mill was made fully operational in 2005 and now runs on a voluntary basis. When you return to Landhotel Alberts, we recommend that you spend the night here. You can then use our cycling package with route 136589. The hospitable country hotel has four stars, so you can bathe in luxury here. It is the highest family hotel in the Netherlands in the South Limburg Hills. You almost feel like you're abroad here!
