The Netherlands is known abroad for its windmills, tulips and clogs, but the polder landscape is certainly a great cultural heritage. About four thousand polders were created to shape our country. Canals, waterways, gullies, fens, channels and ditches irrigate the grounds here using the most ingenious systems that regulate the water. Although there are three types of polders, reclaimed land, embankment and reclamation, you can assume that you will mainly see reclaimed land. Open water has been reclaimed in a reclaimed land. Here a lake or puddle has literally been dried up. Embankments are reclaimed areas on the coast and during reclamation, natural wasteland is reclaimed and prepared for cultural cultivation.
In the polder you pass characteristic villages such as Kollum and Visvliet, which have only a few thousand inhabitants. The horizon is far away in this landscape that stretches before you.
If you like flowers and plants, get off your bike at De Kruidhof botanical garden. Here you will find seventeen thematic gardens, where unique plant collections grow and bloom lushly. In total there are approximately 2,000 species to see, spread over more than 3.5 hectares of land. A wonderful place to stretch your legs!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
