The Netherlands is known as the land of water. That is not surprising when you consider how many excellent examples of water management you find in the Netherlands, including in the form of polders. On this route you explore a number of polders around the hamlet of Wissenkerke by bike.
From polder to polder
The starting point of this cycle tour is in Wissenkerke. From here you cycle further to Geersdijk and Kortgene through the polders. Then you cycle further to Kamperland and back to Wissenkerke. Along the way you cycle through the Spieringpolder, which was reclaimed in 1855, and the Geersdijkpolder, which was constructed in 1667. Polders can be divided into these types: reclaimed land, dikes and reclamations. In a reclaimed land, open water such as a lake has been reclaimed. In Wissenkerke you can take a look at the De Onderneming flour mill. This round, stone mill was built in 1860 and the mill is still operational.
