East of Echt, just across the border, you will find the pleasant town of Heinsberg. A visit is definitely worth it, and why not do it by bike? It is wonderful to find your way through the German landscape and see what exactly is so nice about cycling through the country of our eastern neighbors. Heinsberg is the westernmost city in Germany and has around 40,000 inhabitants. The city is crossed by the river Worm. That river originates near Aachen and flows into the Roer north of Heinsberg. Coins have been excavated nearby, showing that Heinsberg has been a centuries-old city. Heinsberg was probably founded between 98 and 117.
It is logical that the Second World War plays a major role in the history of Germany and in Heinsberg you will find a German military cemetery. German fighters who fell in the First and Second World Wars rest here. Most of the 170 graves contain the victims of the Second World War, who died during fighting at the border. The area in which Heinsberg was located was a front line and there was a lot of fighting here. You can also admire the beautiful church in Heinsberg, if you are prepared to make a steep climb to the entrance of the beautiful religious building.
