Tour of Lichtenvoorde, Barlo and Dale

Your route starts at Hotel Restaurant de Koppelpaarden in Lichtenvoorde. The Vennebulten used to be the domain of highway robbers. Now the nature reserve of about forty hectares is a wonderful area to explore at your leisure. The rare juniper grows on heaths and lovely fens offer the necessary cooling. Don't be surprised when you suddenly see a road running across the moor. This is the old Hessenweg, which connected the German Bocholt and the Hanseatic city of Doesburg. Many goods were transported on that road, ideal for robbers. When a highwayman was caught and executed, he was tried in De Radstake: an inn, tavern and therefore also a place where sentences were carried out. It is named after the wheel that was used as a means of discipline.
