The swaying Frisian Rietlands

Eernewoude, or the Frisian Earnewâld, is full of tourism in the summer. The village has a few hundred inhabitants and is located on the edge of the nature and water sports area De Alde Feanen National Park. A flourishing nature with hundreds of different animal species and thousands of plants attracts new species, one even rarer than the other. Water sports enthusiasts come to enjoy the channels, lakes, ditches, canals and ponds and the view is panoramic: water and peat swamp, in which reed lands wave in the wind, as far as the eye can see! Traditionally, the tourist season in Earnewâld ends with a competition between sailboats that complete a circuit. A fair and the National Umbrella Hanging Championship are also organized annually. Enjoy the typical Dutch polder landscape, where excellent water management predominates. There are three types of polders: reclaimed land, embankment and reclamation. Open water has been reclaimed in a reclaimed land. Here a lake or puddle has literally been dried up. A dike is a reclamation of an area on the coast. These are often salt marshes that have dried up here and dikes protect the area and now keep the water away. During reclamation, natural wasteland is cleared and prepared for cultural cultivation. Reclamation does not always have to result in a polder landscape; former peat, swamp, heath or dune areas can of course also be given a different purpose. The polders you cycle through on this tour have mainly been reclaimed or drained. Your cycling tour starts and ends at Hotel Restaurant Princenhof. You can park your car here for free.
