Delfzijl, Groningen, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 135559
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Few people know that Delfzijl was once a fortified town. In the bustling harbour you can still see some remains of this, such as the monumental Grote Waterpoort from 1833. The lockable gate is still part of the sea wall that protects Delfzijl from high water. Termunterzijl on the Eems estuary enjoys a protected village view. In the terp village of Termunten you can admire the Ursus church from 1275. A little later you drive through the Oldambt, the well-known agricultural area. Just outside Oostwold you see large farms, in the beautiful village itself the farm workers lived. The church in Nieuwolda does not have a weathercock on its spire, but a mermaid as a reference to the land that has been reclaimed from the sea.
