The authentic catchment area of the Drentsche Aa

The esdorp village of Rolde is located east of Assen. Before 1813, Rolde was the main village of the Landschap Drenthe, as the province was previously called. From afar you can see Rolde's church tower, the one near the Gothic Jacobus Church. There are several cart tracks in the area from the Balloërveld, which point to Rolde's tower. The area's jurisdiction even took place in Rolde, but despite the clear importance of the town, Rolde never received city rights. Assen was instead designated as the capital of Drenthe in 1813, a place that had city rights in 1809. This shifted the importance that Rolde had to this city. The Saxon farms around the village green, the fields on the rounded ash trees, the higher fields and the hay fields and meadows that you pass are also charming. The agricultural life is reflected in the activities on the land: haying, mowing and sowing a semi-open landscape. Near Rolde you will find dolmen D17 and dolmen D17. D17 is close to the church, but Dolmen D18 is in a better condition. The dolmens are located in such beautiful locations that many painters have already immortalized them on their canvas. At the Balloërveld you will pass a sheepfold that houses a flock of sheep. About 400 Drenthe heath sheep form the largest flock in Drenthe. An information center has been set up near the cage, where you can learn more about the usefulness of a sheepfold and the animals. The cage is a fun tourist attraction.
