Description

Explore a picturesque part of Belgium and cycle through the Tongeren area. Tongeren once started as a Gallo-Roman civilian settlement in 15 BC. In the following centuries, the city began to play an increasingly important role in the history of the Low Countries. Tongeren obtained market rights in the second century and a seat of the first diocese in the third century. Since the second half of the last century, Tongeren has been developed as a trading center and tourist attraction. Borgloon is a village near Heers. The name Loon comes from the Germanic Lauhun, which means'wooded hill\\\'. Borg comes from the word castle and with that the village refers to its origin, because traditionally there was a castle on a wooded hill. The village is first mentioned in 1078. Around 1200 a second wall was built around the castle. In the course of the thirteenth century, Loon lost almost all its financial significance as a coin workshop to Hasselt. Even the title as the county's capital was transferred to Hasselt. Borgloon is currently known as the care center of the region.
The first sight on the route is Betho Castle. This castle was built in the thirteenth century. The castle farm consists of two parts and has four wings. The wings are built in classical style and has a southern corner tower built in the fifteenth century. The other parts of the castle were thoroughly modified in the seventeenth century, so that rococo elements can be found in the present-day castle. From here you continue to Chateau de Hex. Particularly special is the adjacent park, which is one of the first landscaped gardens on the continent. The park is almost untouched to this day and still has exactly the same appearance as it did 300 years ago. At the castle you will also find a beautiful rose garden with the most diverse roses. The last sight on the route is Rullingen Castle. This castle was replaced in the Middle Ages by a typical Maasland water castle. The castle was adapted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the then prevailing housing standards. A coach house has been added and a beautiful English garden to the south of the castle. The castle has served as a residence for many years, but in recent years it has housed a hotel-restaurant. However, this hotel went bankrupt and closed in May 2013.
