In the area between Maastricht and Liège you can make beautiful trips. It is high time to get on your bike to discover the area of Eben-Emael, Sluizen and Val-Meer. Here you will find quarries, forts and traces from times long past.
Quarries in Eben-Emael
Wonck is the starting point of this route. Near this village you will find Eben-Emael, which is known for the many quarries you will find there. The largest quarry is located on the west side of the village. This quarry has a surface area of no less than 220 hectares. The 1,800 tons of marl that is extracted here is transported daily to the cement factory in Lixhe. Furthermore, the largest fort in Belgium is located in Eben-Emael, which is an impressive sight.
Traces from the past
The route also takes you past Val-Meer. A flint axe dating from prehistoric times was found here, indicating that the area has been inhabited for a long time. Many traces of a Roman settlement were also excavated. Val-Meer is located in Droog-Haspengouw. Characteristic of this region is the marl in the subsoil and the presence of the marl quarries. On the road to Herderen lies the Meerberg, which is no less than 113 meters high. This is a characteristic element in the landscape.
