Limburg enjoyment in Maastricht and Haspengouw

A historic city and a charming rural region can be easily combined for a beautiful day of cycling. This route takes you through Maastricht and the Flemish Haspengouw.

Haspengouw
After crossing the Jeker river, you drive through the Aldenhofpark. In this beautiful city park you can see the Jesuit Wall, a remnant of the fourteenth-century second city wall. You cross the Albert Canal, after which you enter Haspengouw. Here you cycle through an undulating and open landscape where a lot of wheat and sugar beets are grown in the fields. In this quiet area you will pass through some characteristic Flemish-Limburg villages. You will see square farms, but also beautiful churches.

Kanne
In Kanne you can visit the marl caves at the Avergat, a unique experience. On the other side of the Albert Canal you will see Château Neercanne. This seventeenth-century Baroque castle is the only terraced castle in the Netherlands. The castle was built on the original location of old defenses, the caves of which are used as a wine cellar. 

Mill of Lombok
The Lombok Mill dates from 1500 on the Jeker River. Over time, grain was ground, oil was pressed, wood was sawn and wool was spun. From 1850 onwards, weapons were made by successively two Maastricht weapons manufacturers. The mill owes its current name to the 'pacification' of the island of Lombok in 1894. During that battle, guns made in this mill were used.
