Hunebeddenroute Zuidlaardermeer and Drentsche Aa

This route takes you through the nature reserves De Strubben and the Kniphorstbos. These areas are part of De Drentsche Aa National Park, the only archaeological reserve in the Netherlands. The starting point of the route is in the old excavated peat colony of Veendam. The peat colony grew considerably from about 1655 and peat extraction and peat shipping brought with it a growth of the agricultural industry. From here you cycle to National Park De Drentsche Aa, where you will find various burial mounds and dolmens from prehistoric times. Hunebed D04 and hunebed D03, together called the Hunenborg, are hidden between two old farmhouses. Hunebed D08 is in the best condition of all the dolmens in this area.
