Description

This route takes you through the nature reserves De Strubben and the Kniphorstbos. These areas are part of De Drentsche Aa National Park, the only archaeological reserve in the Netherlands. The starting point of the route is in the old excavated peat colony of Veendam. The peat colony grew considerably from around 1655 and peat extraction and peat shipping brought about a growth in the agricultural industry. From here you cycle to De Drentsche Aa National Park, where you will find various burial mounds and dolmens from prehistoric times. Dolmen D04 and dolmen D03, which together are called the Hunenborg, are hidden between two old farms. Dolmen D08 is in the best condition of all dolmens in this area. Take a break at Pannenkoekenboerderij Brinkzicht along the way!
