Description
This bike ride takes you to the Drentse Eelde and the banks of the picturesque Paterswoldsemeer, in Groningen. Cycling is wonderful in the Drents-Gronings lake area!
Paterswoldsemeer
Just outside Glimmen you start. You soon drive to the Paterswoldsemeer, on the border between the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen, which together with the Hoornsemeer forms the Drents-Gronings lake area. The Paterswoldsemeer was created by peat excavations in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the early 20th century, the area was discovered by wealthy holidaymakers. It is still a popular destination for a trip for (urban) Groningen residents.
The Outdoor Place
On the east side of the Paterswoldsemeer you will pass windmill De Helper from 1863. It had to make way for a highway in 1961 and was rebuilt here. The mill regularly grinds on Sunday afternoons. Cycling along the Paterswoldsemeer you see many sailors, a beautiful sight! In Eelde, visit Museum De Buitenplaats, which specializes in figurative art. Back at Pannenkoekhuis Paviljoen Appelbergen you can enjoy a pancake. You're definitely in the mood for that!
