This cycle route first leads you through the stream valley of the Ruiten Aa, one of the most beautiful stream valleys in the Netherlands. A little later you can experience the old history of Bourtange, because this fortified village looks about the same as it did in 1742. William of Orange had the fortress built in the sixteenth century to liberate Groningen from Spanish hands. Along the way, drink a cup of coffee on the terrace of Eetcafé de Leeuw, in the former Wedde estate. On your route you will also find Huis te Wedde, a castle whose origins date back to 1360. On the edge of Onstwedde you will pass one of the two still existing Groningen Juffertorens. This over 41 meters high Juffertoren dates from the thirteenth century. It appears to be skewed, but that's an optical illusion!
