This route takes you through Appelscha and the Drents-Friese Wold. Even into nature to enjoy the peace and the fresh air.
National Park
From the parking lot in Appelscha you start this beautiful route through the Drents-Friese Wold. After the Veluwe, this is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands. It consists of a mix of vast forests, heathlands and drifting sands. It is as if you are in a completely different country - or in a different time, because it is wonderfully quiet here.
Aekingerzand
Between Boswachterij Appelscha and Boswachterij Smilde you drive twice over a shady road along vast grasslands. You cross the Tilgrup, the stream that forms the border between Friesland and Drenthe here. You also come across the Aekingerzand sub-area. In this drifting sand area, weather and wind have free rein. There is a lookout tower here that offers you a beautiful panorama. For example, over the Grenspoel that you drive past a little later.
