National Park
You start this beautiful route through the Drents-Friese Wold from the parking lot in Appelscha. After the Veluwe, this is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands. It consists of a mix of vast forests, heaths and shifting sands. It's like being in a completely different country - or in a different time, because it's wonderfully quiet here.
Aekingerzand
Between Boswachterij Appelscha and Boswachterij Smilde you drive twice on a leafy road along extensive grasslands. You cross the Tilgrup, the stream that forms the border between Friesland and Drenthe here. You will also pass the Aekingerzand sub-area. In this shifting sand area, wind and weather have free rein. There is a watchtower here that offers you a beautiful panorama. For example, about the Grenspoel where you drive past a little later.
