National Park
From the parking lot in Appelscha you start this beautiful route through the Drents-Friese Wold. After the Veluwe, this is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands. It consists of a mix of extensive forests, heathlands and drifting sands. It's as if you are in a completely different country - or in a different time, because it is wonderfully quiet here.
Aekingerzand
Between Boswachterij Appelscha and Boswachterij Smilde you drive twice along a leafy road along extensive grasslands. You cross the Tilgrup, the stream that forms the border between Friesland and Drenthe. You will also pass through the Aekingerzand sub-area. In this drifting sand area, wind and weather have free rein. There is a lookout tower here that offers you a beautiful panorama. For example, about the Grenspoel, which you will pass a little later.
