The Fochteloërveen and Norg

The Fochteloërveen is one of the best preserved raised bog areas in the Netherlands. From the saddle you can optimally enjoy the panoramic view. You also drive through the village of Norg and past the Prison Museum.

Watchtower
You leave from the parking lot in Appelscha. In this nice town you will see two nineteenth-century locks, and you will also pass the beautiful Reformed Church from 1869. On the edge of the Fochteloërveen you can climb a lookout tower, from the top you have a unique panorama. The fact that this special nature reserve has been preserved is probably due to chance: it is fairly isolated on the border between Drenthe and Friesland.

Norgerholt
In Westervelde you pass the Tonckensborg. This mansion from 1630 has been inhabited by the Tonckens family since 1742. You will also see some beautiful monumental farms here, what a special atmosphere! Just outside the village you pass dolmen D2. Then you drive through the Norgerholt, a small forest that probably dates from the ninth century! Above Norg you cycle through the forests of the Langeloërduinen, via the Fochteloërveen again you drive back to Appelscha.
