Wilhelminaoord, Tuk and Steenwijk

As part of the De Eese estate, the Eeserveld is located north of Steenwijk. A large part of De Eese is privately owned; here is a forest that is 440 hectares in size and 360 hectares of land are used for agriculture. On the estate is an old castle that was probably built at the beginning of the seventeenth century. An old country house and a large barn stand like silent sentries at the castle. A smaller part of De Eese, the Eeserveld, is maintained by Staatsbosbeheer. There are many forests here, which hide the burial mounds in this part of De Eese from view. At a heathland, the trees diverge to offer a beautiful view over the heath. Historic cart tracks from the Middle Ages run through the area, so when you cycle here, keep your eyes peeled for these fun glimpses into the past."Beautiful bamboo\\\", or Mei Chu, can be admired at Mei Chu bamboo nursery. Various bamboo species, but also Chinese and Japanese trees, shrubs and perennials are grown on three hectares. The garden is artfully laid out and is ideal for a short walk. Get off your bike at the bamboo nursery and meander along the winding paths, while great crested newts, grass snakes, slow worms and tree frogs watch you curiously among the leaves. Green frogs provide a pleasant croak, which you can hear when you walk through the garden or have a quiet drink on the terrace.
