Description
Bergen op Zoom originated on a sand ridge in a peat area that was reclaimed in the thirteenth century. Initially, the Lord of Breda ruled the town, but between 1198 and 1212 Bergen op Zoom received city rights. It is not possible to determine exactly in which year this historical fact took place, because the city archives were lost in a major city fire in 1397. This fire was so intense that almost the entire city went up in flames.
The Marquisate of Bergen op Zoom was a region around the Brabant city. It stretched from present-day Bergen op Zoom to Woensdrecht, parts of present-day Moerdijk and an area east of Roosendaal. After the lord of Breda died childless, the area was divided between two daughters of Godfried II, creating the Land van Bergen op Zoom as a marquisate. This Dutch junction came to an end in 1795; later it was bought by the Batavian Republic. The bike tour leads you through the heart of Bergen op Zoom, but also over the water.
