Description

Your cycling route starts at De Pannekoekenbakker Woudrichem, with a beautiful terrace on the water. From here you discover the Biesbosch. The area borders one of the most important defense lines in Dutch history: the New Dutch Waterline. This was constructed in the eighteenth century and stretched 85 kilometers long. The height of the water was regulated with an ingenious system, causing ships to run aground or the water to become impassable. Massive forts were also built, such as Fort Steurgat. The bomb-proof barracks were built in 1881 and connect two underground powder magazines. The fort closed the Merwede at the end of the Waterliniepad. The existing buildings have now been converted into villas, penthouses and apartments. This has created an exclusive and special residential island.
