Small villages are central to this cycle route, which takes you through the beautiful Belgian landscape from one hamlet to the next in the Belgian province of Limburg. The village of Rijkel is a sub-municipality of the municipality of Borgloon, which is known as the care centre of the area. Rijkel is a very small hamlet with only a few hundred inhabitants. The village has a pleasant agricultural character. There is therefore a lot of greenery in the area. The most famous tourist attraction of Rijkel is the U-shaped moated castle, the Kasteel van Rijkel, which was built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The village of Hoepertingen is also located near Rijkel as a sub-municipality of Borgloon. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the village was part of one of the redemption villages and was part of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands until 1795.
Hoepertingen has developed from one of the Haspengouw agricultural villages to a residential village with ribbon development, where the agricultural character still plays a role, but where other sectors were also given the opportunity to emerge. And with this route you also cycle through the small village of Klein-Gelmen, which was an independent municipality until 1971 despite its 426 inhabitants. In 1977, Klein-Gelmen was added to Gelmen during a municipal reorganization. Klein-Gelmen is no less than 75 meters above sea level on the Herk. The fruit growing company where the formerly popular TV series Katarakt was set is located in the village.
