Description

Originally, the Zandstuwe, a nature reserve that lies between Den Ham and Vroomshoop, was a sand drift, but you can't see anything of this today. Nowadays the Zandstuwe is formed by a forest, covering an area of 140 hectares and hi. It is a particularly varied landscape due to many different types of wood and a lot of variety in open and overgrown areas. It is an ideal forest for birds of prey such as buzzards, hawks, sparrow hawks and owls. Initially the afforestation arose spontaneously, but since 1910 the forest has been transformed into production forest. The village of Vroomshoop is located on the edge of the Overijssels canal. The name Vroomshoop comes from the former monks who always had a point of reference when they got lost. That was a hill called"the pious hope\\\". Over the centuries this has been corrupted into Vroomshoop. This picturesque village still has a peat colonial character. After the peat of the land around the village, the site was mainly used as agricultural land. Just east of Vroomshoop you will find another hamlet called Westerhaar-Vrienveensewijk. This is also originally an agricultural village and partly a peat village. This hamlet is first mentioned in 1850, but 1885 is generally accepted as the year of foundation. In that year, the first stone of the Rehoboth School was laid in this village, which has the longest name in the Netherlands with 28 characters.
