The colorful bulb fields and the water of the Markermeer are the backdrop for this cycle route, which starts in picturesque Hoorn with its protected cityscape and historic buildings. The first half of this route goes along the water of the Markermeer. Originally, this area was to be reclaimed into the Markerwaard. Those plans fell through. The function of the water for the bird population was too important, and moreover, the draining in other places turned out to entail risks and was not financially feasible. Fortunately, today you can enjoy extensive views over the water. De Groote Molen was built between 1603 and 1638. It was later fitted with a screw pump and pumped the water into the Zuiderzee. The mill has been restored since 1979. The route continues through the exuberant color splendor of the vast bulb fields east of Hoorn. Various flowers are in bloom throughout spring and summer. The bulb fields in the Netherlands attract thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. Korenmolen de Krijgsman was built in 1602. After a lightning strike, the mill burned down and was rebuilt. With a scaffolding height of 10.4 metres, the new Molen de Krijgsman became the highest mill in North Holland. The mill has been restored and has been running on the wind again since 2003. In the mill shop you can buy flour and all kinds of other baking products.
